National Police Week is being observed across the country, with Tunica County set to host a commemorative program on May 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the amphitheater in the downtown park. The week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15 and events honoring law enforcement officers who have lost their lives or continue to serve.

The observance highlights the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement personnel. National Police Week was established by presidential proclamation by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 as a time for communities to come together in recognition of police service and bravery.

“During National Police Week, we honor all who serve and protect. It’s more than a badge. It’s an oath, a commitment, and a duty to stand for others, often at great personal sacrifice,” organizers said in an announcement about this year’s events.

Organizers also said, “National Police week is both a time of solemn remembrance and a celebration of the men and women who serve with integrity and bravery every day. It reminds us that behind every badge is a story of service, sacrifice and family.” Each year during May, communities recognize officers’ courage through memorials as well as public programs such as the upcoming event hosted by the Town of Tunica.

The Tunica County Sheriff’s Office serves all areas within Tunica County, Mississippi; it operates as part of county government while managing both administrative headquarters and the county detention center. The office focuses on maintaining social order through professional law enforcement services that adhere to ethical standards according to the official website. Community outreach initiatives include senior engagement programs, child passenger safety education efforts, domestic violence awareness campaigns, and use of tools like its K-9 unit Paw Patrol car for engaging residents according to the official website.

This annual observance offers residents an opportunity not only for reflection but also for direct engagement with those tasked with protecting their community.
