DeSoto County Sheriff's Department - The Desoto County Sheriff's Department Junior Deputy Academy Session 2

61

The Desoto County Sheriff's Department Junior Deputy Academy Session 2 is going great this week.  This week's class includes 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from Center Hill Elementary and Northpoint School.

The class began Monday with the kids getting the opportunity to meet Sheriff Bill Rasco, who swore them in as Junior Deputies.  SRO Zack Dickerson conducted a tour of the Sheriff's Department where they met Major Shepherd, Major Palmer, and Major Henley.  The Motor's Division put on a nice demonstration with their motorcycles.  They heard from Agent Billy Royal who is on the hostage negotiations team.  They also learned about dispatch and 911 from Sgt. Katie Flynn who is one of the Communications Division Supervisors.

On Tuesday, Deputy Sydney Williamson  went over patrol Deputy functions with them.  She also explained how Deputies use technology with their laptops to fight crime.  Special Investigations Division Deputies told them about the dangers of drugs, and about how their investigations help keep them safe.  Lt. J. Prewitt, Deputy H. Garrett, and Deputy J. Bramlett showed them some of their SWAT equipment and vehicles.

The SRO Deputies hosted Wednesday's Junior Deputy Academy at Center Hill Elementary School.  Detective Jessica Palmer described to the kids what she does as a criminal investigator.  Detective Craig Dickson and Crime Scene Technician Amber Edlin showed them how they lift fingerprints and how special UV lights help them investigate crimes.  Sgt. Chip Logan explained how they need to be very careful if they use social media, as he specializes in investigating Internet Crimes Against Children.  They had a great time on their field day with the slides from Blue Line Inflatables.
