CCC baseball drops two at Saluqi Invitational
The CCC baseball team opened its 2023 regular season today in the Saluqi Invitational, which was held in Millington, Tennessee.
Coahoma faced Jackson State CC in the first game of the day, and played against Southwest TN. CC in the second matchup
.
In the top of the fifth inning against Jackson State, Coahoma had runners on first and third base with one out. An RBI ground out by Jake Smith on the ensuing at bat allowed Christo Peeks to score.
That was followed by a single for CCC's Kaden Wilson, but the inning ended with a swinging strikeout on the ensuing at bat. Coahoma trailed 5-1 in the middle of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Tigers had a runner on second and third base with two outs. Cade Gadman stepped to the plate, and hit a two-RBI single that scored Anthony Newson and Parker Harris.
The score was 5-3 JSCC after the top of the sixth inning. Jackson State went on to win the game 5-3 in seven innings.
Coahoma recorded seven hits off 28 at bats. Harris led the team in hits with three in four at bats.
Aiden Singley was CCC's starting pitcher. He tallied three strikeouts, while allowing six hits and five runs in 4.0 innings pitched.
In the second game of the day, an RBI single by Donovan Shead allowed Patrick Mangels to score in the top of the fourth inning. CCC trailed 3-1 after the top of the fourth inning.
Southwest Tennessee responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and six in the fifth. Coahoma fell 11-1 in seven innings.
Tyler Cavenaugh got the start on the mound for the Tigers against Southwest Tennessee. He allowed four earned runs through 4.0 innings pitched.
Following today's games; CCC is 0-2 (0-0 MACCC) this season. Coahoma's next doubleheader will be played at Dyersburg State CC on Tuesday, Jan. 7. The first game of that series is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
