Northwest Tennis Sweeps Southwest Mississippi
For just the second time this season, the men's and women's tennis teams of Northwest finished with a sweep, as both programs scored 9-0 wins at Southwest Mississippi on Tuesday afternoon.
Northwest, ranked No. 24 in the ITA Men's National Rankings, picked up its third straight victory and the fourth conference win, improving to 4-4 on the season and 4-0 in the MACCC. The Lady Rangers moved to 2-6 overall and earned their first shutout win of the season, advancing to 2-3 in the MACCC.
Northwest opened with a 2-0 advantage on the women's side, with Lia Ramos scoring a forfeit win on No. 6 singles and the doubles tandem of Ramos and Rivers Tarsi earning a forfeit win on No. 3 doubles. From there, the Lady Rangers swept doubles play, with Raney Peacock and Holly Stewart scoring a 9-7 victory against Larina Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Kuntz in the No. 1 slot, and the duo of Amelia Anding and Grace Ann Wade adding an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 slot against Emma Carruth and Sophie Tompkins.
In singles play, Anding picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Anderson on No. 1, while Stewart added a 6-2, 6-4 win against Kuntz on court two. Wade then added a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles against Carruth, followed by a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 from Peacock. Tarsi then closed out singles competition with a gritty 6-4, 1-6 [10-8] win on No. 5 against Elise Gillissie.
In men's action, Northwest battled to a close doubles win at No. 2, as the duo of Samuel Turner and Bratton Willoughby delivered a 9-8 (7) victory against Phillip Chandler and J.P. Johnson, while Chris Albert and Noah Lary scored an 8-2 win on No. 1 against Jackson Stanford and Alex Velazquez.
John David Nelson and Kaleb Parish closed out a solid effort in doubles play with an 8-0 shutout of Jacob Fairley and Luke Sowell on court three.
In his first singles match of the season, Lary collected a quick 6-0, 6-0 win on No. 6 against Fairley, while Parish played to a shutout win at No. 2 against Velazquez. The closest singles match came on No. 4, where Turner battled to a 6-2, 1-6 [10-4] victory against Johnson.
Albert, Nelson and Willoughby finished out singles play with straight-set wins on courts one, three and five.
Northwest now turns its attention to Friday, March 10, when the Rangers and Lady Rangers travel to MACCC powerhouse Jones College. The Lady Bobcats hold a No. 12 national ranking from the ITA, while the men are currently ranked 15th.
Match times are scheduled for 2 P.M. in Ellisville.
